CT Doctor Accused Of Child Sex Exploitation Dies By Suicide, Officials Say

A Connecticut rheumatology chief arrested following a child exploitation investigation has died by suicide, according to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office.

John Magaldi, age 61, address unknown, the chief of Hartford HealthCare rheumatology at the Bone & Joint Institute, died from a gunshot wound to the head, the medical examiner's office confirmed on Friday, March 15. 

Magaldi was charged in New Haven County by Meriden Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday, March 11 for allegedly seeking sexual activity with children, the Meriden Police said.

The department said Magaldi was arrested along with two other men for attempting to make sexual contact with victims younger than 16.

He was released on a $350,000 bond.

Following his arrest, Hartford HealthCare spokeswoman Tina Varona said:  “We are troubled to learn of the arrest and we take these allegations seriously. 

"With safety as a core value, we have placed Dr. John Magaldi on administrative leave, and we are working to gather information from law enforcement authorities so that we can address this situation appropriately."

On Wednesday, March 13, Connecticut State Police reported they responded to a home on White Wood Road in Litchfield around 9:15 a.m., for a report of an unresponsive person. The adult male found was pronounced dead at the scene, state police added.

State Police did not confirm the body was that of Magaldi.

Magaldi was scheduled to appear in court on Friday, March 22.
